Starting January 1, 2026, customs authorities will not allow the import of goods covered by the CBAM mechanism by anyone other than an authorized CBAM declarant, as per the regulations established by the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EU) 2023/956 of May 10, 2023. Importers are exempt from obligations under this regulation if the net weight of goods imported in a calendar year does not exceed a total threshold of 50 tons.
- Authorized CBAM declarants can temporarily continue importing goods until their status is granted if they applied by March 31, 2026.
- The uniform weight threshold does not apply to the import of electricity and hydrogen.
- If the uniform weight threshold is exceeded, all obligations under the regulation apply to the total emissions related to all goods imported that year.
