New rules for transit operations at the Austria-Switzerland border from May 1, 2026 (update)

New regulations for transit operations at the Austria-Switzerland border will take effect on May 1, 2026. The Austrian Customs Administration has introduced a transitional period ending on April 30, 2026, allowing entities to adapt to the new requirements.

• Electronic notification for transit operations must be submitted to the Austrian transit office using the "Smart Border Austria" application before the shipment arrives.
• If this requirement is not met, the transport vehicle will not be allowed to cross the Austrian border.
• The announcement follows a previous communication dated November 24, 2025.
